The fisheries sector is among the important economic sub sectors of the economy in Tanzania. The sector provides substantial employment, income, livelihood, foreign earnings and revenue to the country. The industry employs more than 4,000,000 people engaged in fisheries and fisheries related activities while more than 400,000 fisheries operators are directly employed in the sector.

In 2009 the fisheries sector contributed 1.3% to GDP, the per capita fish consumption is 8.0 kilogram and about 30% of animal protein consumption in Tanzania is from fish (National Economic Survey, 2009).
