Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority - TFDA

Ease of Access

Sections 18 and 20 of The Tanzania Food and Drug Cosmetics Act (CAP. 219) prohibit manufacture, sell, distribution, importation, or exposure for sale of food from un-registered premises. In order to get registration and licensing of food premises in Tanzania the applicant is required to obtain the Guideline for Registration and Licensing of Food Premises, The Tanzania Food, Drugs and Cosmetics (Fees and Charges)  Regulations, 2011 and Guidelines for Registration of Pre-packed Foods from TFDA website , read it through and then follow the procedures.


  • The plan, process flow, production supervisor, design and construction of the food manufacturing premises shall comply with the requirements of Tanzania Food, Drugs and Cosmetics (Food Hygiene) Regulations, 2006

Procedures :

  • Fill the application form for registration of premises (TFDA No. 1) and for permit /license (TFDA No. 3)
  • If you are a local applicant, pay the prescribed fee (Fees and Charge) deposit into TFDA Account No. 6503900110 at National Microfinance Bank limited.
  • If you are an International applicant pay the prescribed fee (Fees and Charges) by bank transfer to TFDA Account No. 100380013 USD, Citibank, Tanzania Ltd. Dar es Salaam- Head office Peugeot House, 36 Upanga Road, P. O Box 71625, Dar es Salaam Tanzania Swift Code: CITITZ.
  • Submit the dully filled in form  and attached with pay slip to the Health Officer in charge of the area in which the premises is located or nearby TFDA zone office whose officers shall carryout inspection of your premises.
  • Collect registration certificate for the premises from where your application was submitted in a period not less than 45 working days but not exceeding 60 days from the date the application was received at TFDA in case there is no rejection.
  • In case  of food selling premises, business permit/licence can be directly  collected from TFDA HQ, Zone offices, or District Health Offices. In case  of food manufacturing premises, business permit/licence can be collected from the same after procedures for registration of food to be manufactured are complete


  • The applicant may seek advice and consultation from the authority as regards to compliance to Tanzania Food, Drugs and Cosmetics (Food Hygiene) Regulations, 2006
  • Food to be manufactured must be registered by TFDA in case of registrable  food products)
  • If the application is not successful the applicant will be notified via applicant postal address indicated in the application file.
